Presentation tips

Class Activity 1

Assuming you can have whatever props you need, prepare a short presentation on one of the following:
  • Introduce your pet
  • Demonstrate your favourite toy, tool or kitchen appliance
  • Talk about the first place you will visit once we are allowed to travel interstate
Include in your preparation:
  • Introduction to the topic - i.e. what is this presentation about and why you choose this particular topic
  • Do you have a funny or interesting story
  • Objectives of the presentation
  • Who is your target audience? What would be the ideal audience for this presentation?
  • How long will you need for your presentation?
  • List of topics and order for your presentation
  • What props will you need to make the presentation interesting?
  • How will you get audience participation?
Provide constructive feedback for the other students

Discussion with teacher

Now is the time to make sure you are clear on your topic and to ask any further questions with your teacher.

Evaluate feedback

4.1 Seek formal or informal feedback from participants and colleagues according to organisational procedures and established evaluation methods
4.2 Monitor participation levels and provide attendance and participation information to relevant personnel
4.3 Revise supporting documentation incorporating feedback where appropriate

Class Discussion

How would you seek informal feedback?

Formal Feedback

How can you seek formal feedback?

You can create a simple paper-based form using MS Word or similar

You can use an online purpose-built survey. Examples include Survey Monkey and Typeform. These are tools where you can either use a template or create an online form from scratch. Once you have the form complete, you can share it using the URL or other relevant information so that students can access it.

If you don't want to use a survey builder, Google Forms or MS Forms are both great substitutes and provide the result information in a spreadsheet so that you can easily create your own charts and other visuals.

Getting Feedback

How will you get feedback?

You can get feedback at the time of the event or presentation or you can send out a request for feedback after the activity

Paper based, Online or other?

There are multiple ways of gaining feedback from an audience.

One way is to ask the participants to complete a form (paper-based) or depending on the audience you can use something like coloured balls and a jar. For an adult audience you may want more constructive feedback so you would have some open questions to invite responses. For a younger audience smiley faces to indicate that they enjoyed it or a sad face for not. You could also get verbal responses such as a show of hands. This is a great idea for younger audiences but would it count as official feedback?

Another way is to send out a document based questionnaire or design an online questionnaire. I prefer an online questionnaire as they usually take less effort, but that might depend on your audience.

Class Activity 2

How else might you get feedback?

Online Surveys

Here are some lists for free online survey/questionnaire software:

You also have the option of Google Forms or Microsoft Forms. I like these because the data is saved in a spreadsheet that is easy to access.

Class Activity 3

Research FREE online survey options. Select 2 and find out the following information:

  • Name
  • Types of questions
  • Number of questions/responses for free version
  • Ease of use for email/sharing

Select one tool and create a Questionnaire/survey for a fictitious event that was held at Mysty River Regional Library (you may choose the type of event). Post the link in our Facebook group or share with the class.
